About MEF

img_0463.jpg In 2002, a group of business leaders and educators decided to form the Merrillville Education Foundation, a 501 C (3) not-for-profit.  Their mission was to be committed to being the primary private sector partner in supporting public education where public funds are not available in the Merrillville Community School Corporation.  This was accomplished by providing grants for programs that encourage educational innovation, promote excellence and create educational opportunities for students.

Since that time the Merrillville Education Foundation has granted more than 176 grants to teachers totaling more than $143, 550.  These grants have impacted more than 41,075 students in grades K through 12, focusing on basically every learning area and grade level, as well as social and behavioral skills.

Two rounds of grants per year are offered to teachers based on innovative and creative approaches to learning in the classroom.  Funding for the grants is provided by individual memberships, corporate sponsorships, the Spring Gala Fundraising and sales of the Garfield Education License Plate.

In addition, the Merrillville Education Foundation has funded and will continue to fund Major Saver Grants up to $15,000, impacting approximately 4,500 students in grades K through 8.

Through feedback from grant evaluations, it is evident that the Foundation has made a major impact on education  in  the Merrillville schools, supporting the motto of the school corporation — “We Strive For Excellence.”
